What is the difference between BW and CW cable glands?

Electrical junctions are completed by using cable glandsfor electrical, automation, instrumentation, and control systems for different industries. These glands make the electrical junctions robust and avoid loose connections. A cable gland is used for protecting the junctions from the weather as well as internal industrial conditions. There are two types of glands, BW and CW glands developed by the manufacturers to meet certain industrial requirements.

Difference between CW and BW glands

BW glands or brass glands are used for steel wire junctions. These glands are designed for armored cables for proper clamping for proper electrical continuation in the system. In fact, the mechanical retention of the cables is also taken care of. BW cable glandsare used for indoor applications. Indoor electrical junctions do not require waterproofing. This is why BW glands are used in indoor systems.

CW glands are almost the same but have the features to retain electrical continuation in outdoor systems. They can handle the weather conditions without compromising the mechanical continuity of the steel wires. Most manufacturers develop water-resistant CW cable glandsthat help ward off moisture and rain. The features of these glands enable proper connections between the wires and the system for outdoor systems!

Bottom line

The glands are chosen based on the following features:

·         Environmental protection for electrical connections should be considered.

·         The cable glandsmust have proper earth continuity so that they can withstand short circuit failures and resist disconnection.

·         Proper ingression is required and the glands offer the same to the electrical connections while entering an enclosure.

·         Proper sealing of the electrical junctions to the systems is maintained.

The industries choose cable glandsas per their requirements. Considering the internal and external factors, these glands are chosen to ensure safe and secure electrical connections!
